The Calm Yacht of Jason Van Der Slot

Jason Van Der Slot grew up on the 26th largest island in the entire world known as Tasmania. Tasmania is located off the coast of Australia and it is a part of its Commonwealth. Living on an island afforded Jason Van Der Slot the chance to go sailing. He still remembers the first time he ever went sailing. He was amazed at how peaceful the whole experience was. From the very beginning, Jason Van Der Slot knew that he would want to sail for the rest of his life.

Jump to today, and Jason Van Der Slot is well known in the areas of Tasmania and Australia as an avid yachtsman and sailboat racer. He has spent his life learning all there is to know about racing. He has learned the inside and outside of his sailing vessel. He has also learned about nearly every other type of sailboat there is. He is not just an enthusiast of the sport of yacht racing, but he has become a historian of the subject as well. Additionally, he has even learned about the physics of sailing including how waves work on a fundamental level.

It is with all of that in mind that the Calm, a TP52 class yacht, is in good hands. Jason Van Der Slot owns the racing vessel, along with his partners Graeme Ainley and John Williams. The trio spent a total of five months helping to restore the boat and making sure it was ready to race. The Calm has ended up with some impressive results so far. In 2009, the Calm took IRC honors in the ORCV’s Melbourne to Stanley Race. During the Rolex Sydney Hobart race, the Calm ended up finishing in 10th place in its division. Most recently, James Van Der Slot is proud to say that the Calm finished in third place in ORCi Division 1.
